An analysis and a proposal for the enhancement of the Correctional Mission of the Korean church

This study deals with the relationship between the church and correctional mission in the biblical, theological, historical and missiological aspect. The lessons for Correctional mission in the Bible have been analysed. Model of correctional mission can be found in the ministry of Jesus and the early church. Correctional mission was regarded as an crucial ministry for Apostle Paul and for the many in the Old Testament. Accordingly, it has been argued the correctional mission is the nature of the church in the Bible. Correctional mission was the crucial ministry of the early church when she carried out her ministry for the society and witness to God. During the middle age, ministry of the church for the people in prison was evident. It can be concluded the correctional ministry has been crucial for the church. From the analysis of current situation in the respect of crime and the changes in the correctional welfare administration, the possibility and responsibility of the church for correctional mission has been argued. The model of church as a servant and an organic body has been discussed. Lack of professional personal, administrative supporting system, lack of corporation system and relevant institutions, lack of realization and participation of the church in correctional mission have been pointed out. In order to overcome the problems and as result to enhance the correctional mission in Korea, this study suggested enhancing professional dimension, building a corporational system among institutions, transforming perception and participating the church in term of correctional mission. The practical strategy for mobilization of the congregation and establishment of supporting system should be planned. Formation of missiology relating to correctional mission are required additionally.
