조선시대 읍치의 진산과 주산

Reading the Meanings of the Jinsan and Jusan of Eupchi(county seat) in the Joseon Dynasty

본고에서는 현재 대전·충남 지역에 해당하는 조선시대 37개 군·현의 읍치를 사례로 지리지, 고지도, 현지답사 등을 병행하는 경험적 연구를 통해 鎭山과 主山 상황을 파악하고, 이를 바탕으로 주요한 읍치경관 중 하나인 진산·주산이 어떻게 구분될 수 있는지 또 그것이 어떤 의미로 구성되었는지 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 대부분 군·현 단위에서 진산과 주산은 따로 구분할 필요가 없을 정도로 일치하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서 진산과 주산이 서로 다른 산세를 지칭할 것이라고 전제하는 입장은 재고될 필요가 있으며, 오히려 동일한 산세를 두고도 진산 또는 주산이라는 상이한 개념으로 구분하는 것이 어떤 의미가 있는지 관심 가질 필요가 있다. 고을의 수호신으로서 진산은 자연숭배신앙과 고려시대 국가적 차원의 비보풍수적 관점이, 그리고 근원의 상징물이자 자연-인간 간 매개체로서 주산은 조선 후기 일상화되는 명당풍수적 입장이 주요하게 반영된 개념으로 구분할 수 있었다. 따라서 풍수와의 관련성 여부를 가지고 진산과 주산을 이분법적으로 구분하기보다는 그동안 전통적 공간인식체계로 이해되어 온 풍수가 진산과 주산 양 개념에 모두 관련되어 있음을 고려할 필요가 있다.

This study is about the meaningful mountains called Jinsan (a guardian mountain) and Jusan (a main mountain), located in the back of most Korean traditional villages and cities. For that time, these two mountains have been regarded as the same or the different things. First, I examined the geographical features of Jinsan and Jusan of Eupchi (county seat) through the experiential investigations on the geographical archives and old maps, keeping pace with field surveys on Daejeon and Chungnam regions in the Joseon Dynasty. I identified that these two mountains are almost the same. So I propose to discriminate these two mountains from the viewpoint of the meanings rather than the geographical situations. Second, I tried to explore the meanings of Jinsan and Jusan, focusing on the relation between the real and the linguistic from the phenomenological methodology. Jinsan had been normalized as the guardian of place in the early Joseon Dynasty, combined with the national bibo fengshui of the Goryeo Dynasty. Jusan began to be shared culturally as the symbol of the origin of place and human from the late Joseon Dynasty with becoming popular of myeongdang fenshui. All these two mountains need to be considered the peculiar concepts of the mountains reflecting fengshui as the Korean traditional geography from now on.
