Is postmodernism a threat or an opportunity for history? There have been many theoretical debates on this question. It is time now to ponder concretely how to ‘appropriate’ postmodernism for the sake of Korean history. What use could Korean history make of postmodernism? While the epistemological premise for modern history was that history could be written by constructing or reconstructing the reality of the past, postmodern historical epistemology is based on the deconstruction of the reality. How is it possible to write history through deconstruction, and if it is possible, what significance could be found in such history? To answer this question, I tried to apply the notion of metahistory, which means to read deconstructively the studies of three historians who viewed in different ways the period from husamguk(後三國) to the founding of Koreo(高麗). To analyze these studies with Haydn White's metahistory, Kim Gap-Dong's is written by an emplotment of romance, Lee Do-Hak's by that of comedy, and Lee Jae-Beom's by that of tragedy.
