포르투갈의 타일 공예인 아줄레주는 15세기에 포르투갈에 도입된 이후로 제작 가법이나 장삭기법의 변화를 거치면서 현재까지 꾸준히 사용되고 있다. 이런 타일 공예는 포르투갈 뿐만이 아니라 스페인과 네덜란드 등 다른 지역에서도 찾 아 볼 수 있지만 제한적인 장식 형태로만 사용되었던 이들 지역과는 달리 포르투갈은 본토와 해외 식민지, 특히 브라질에서 건축과 건물장식의 주요한 소재로 사용될 만큼 그 사용범위가 넓었다. 포르투갈의 아줄레주는 장식적인 측면뿐만 이 아니라 당시의 사회상이나 사건 그리고 생활상을 엿볼 수 있게 하는 중요한 사료로서의 가지도 지니고 있다.

Azulejo is a portuguese word used to denote a square plaque of ceramic material, one side of which is decorated and glazed. It is one of the most impressive portuguese art Azulejo has heen employed for several centuries. Originally it was imported from Sevilla, Spain. However, it is Portugal where the tie decoration was fully flourished. Furthermore, there are something portuguese that emmot be found in the same kind of tile decoration in other countries. Azulejos were largely used as decoration in whole Portugal for almost five centuries withrut interruption. It makes Azulejo me of the determining elements of Portugal. Portuguese Azulejo had been changed its characters from century to century. We can differentiate them not only by its manufacturing skills but by colors and decorative forms. The reason we are interested in Azulejo is because it should be considered as historical reference being capable of showing everyday life of those times just like pictures.
