This is an essay to reflect the study of western history in Korea from 1945 to 1990. In the Korean modern society, the word, "international open door" or “modernization" has meant the westernization. Now we have to think about what the Korean scholars of western history have played some role for this social need. Korean society needed the study of nationalism, of democracy and scientific thought since 1945, because Korean people had have to struggle toward all kinds of imperialism and despotism and to establish the basement for the industrialization. But the Korean historian of western history could not contribute to this project. What was the reason? In this essay I try to search the answer for this question. At first, the number of students was too small to study enough the many kinds of western history; for example, the history of all the time and of diverse fields; the political, economical, social, cultural and religious history. Especially, in the Korean study society of western history were the elite-group which was constituted by members of graduates from a special college. They had elite-consciousness. They have disregarded the other member of graduates from else. They have monopolized the stream of study of western history. But they had not a some issue or a special consciousness to express through their study. They have pursed the study for only ways and means of maintaining their job as a college professor, or of obtaining the degree. These attitude of scholars has made the western history be looked away from the societies and general citizens. For example, The western history became into an unpopular lesson in the college and was excepted from the object for the many kind of national examination for selection of officers. According to these attitude, the western historians have failed to pervade the knowledge of western world into popular society in Korea. And they had not have the large perspective in the knowledge of world history. I could estimate the reasons how the Korean study of western history from 1945 to 1990 could not be developed. 1) To be unable to liberate from the closed consciousness to native language. 2) The prejudice that the translation of the book written by foreign language might be uncorrect. And the laziness of scholars who refused the translation of foreign books. 3) The fixed idea of original resources; Because of it, it was impossible to acquire the diverse information of the world history. 4) The preponderance of the pedantic and microscopic subject; The students of western history could not have any issue on the wide foundation of large field of knowledge.
