Study on the Author of Hanwon's (翰苑) Understanding and Description of the Chapter of Samhan(三韓傳)

This study is concerning the two problems in the chapter of Samhan of Beon-i section(蕃夷部) in Hanwon. Firstly, the source of quotations in the chapter and the arrangement of its contents were analyzed and a simple revision of the chapter was carried out. And the author of Hanwon, Jang Cho-geum'(張楚金)s idea on the historical resources like Wilyag(魏略), Huhanseo(後漢書) and Samgugji(三國志) which contains records of Samhan was also analyzed. By analyzing these subjects, we can elucidate the fact that the author arranged contents with reference to the chapter of Han(韓傳) in Huhanseo, and most quotations are from Huhanseo. From this information, it is possible to see that the author regarded the chapter of Han in Huhanseo the most refined reference. When some words in a quotation from Huhanseo was overlapped with contents of Wilyag, Jang Cho-geum omitted the overlapped words on the basis of Wilyag. Jang Cho-geum also referred to Wilyag to make up for the insufficiency of records in Huhanseo. These aspects show us that Jang Cho- geum regarded Wilyag as an important historical source since it was written before Huhanseo. It is interesting that Jang Cho-geum didn't quote the records from the chapter of Han in Huhanseo which shows the diplomatic situation among countries at the time, even though it isn't overlapped with Wilyag's contents. He referred to the chapter of Han in Samgugji, which is currently regarded as an important historical source by scholars, not for the chapter Samhan, but for the chapter Silla and the chapter Baekje in Hanwon. From the information gathered in this study, it is possible to draw several historically relevant conclusions. The author fully understood the geographical situation of Samhan. He knew that Samhan had a relationship with counties and prefectures of Han, and on the basis of this understanding, he arranged contents which show an unique social aspect of Samhan. He also appended some important political records to the book. This aspect shows us that Jang Cho-geum was fully aware of all the records of Samhan. On the other hand, Hanwon doesn't seem to be a typical history book because it contains the chapter of Buyeo(夫餘) and Samhan which weren't exist by the time Jang Cho-geum was writing this book. It is more like an Encyclopedia, and it seems to have something to do with the policy on Eastern countries of Tang. But it is not easy to analyze the purpose of the publication of this book by examining only one existing section, the Beon-i, out of other 30 missing sections so that this study is only concerning the chapter Samhan.
