본 논문은 최근 발생한 도요다 리콜사태와 전문가들의 지적한 문제점들을 고찰하여 이 사태를 통해 진정한 교훈이 될 만 한 점을 찾아보았다. 자동차업계 전문가들을 비롯한 학자들에 의하면 이번 리콜사태는 중요한 교훈들을 몇 가지 남겼다고 한다. 다섯 가지의 교훈들은 무리한 확대성장 자제, 신속한 사태파악과 진실규명, 부품업체의 선정과 관리, 잘못에 대한 책임, 그리고 명성과 신뢰에 맞는 성장등이 리콜 사태를 통해 제시되었다. 본 논문을 통해 조사한 바에 의하면 제시된 교훈 중 네 가지 교훈은 도요다 리콜 사태기간중 소비자의 반감을 대변한 도요다에 대한 비평에 가까운 점이 많이 나타났고 단 한가지 배울 점은 부품업체의 선정과 관리에서 잘못된 점이었다. 이번 사건은 도요타가 확대성장, 잘못된 부품생산, 늦은 진실규명 또는 신뢰와 명성을 저버린 사태가 아니었고 도요타의 부품업체선정과 관리에 대한 잘못된 결정이 원인으로 규정되어지고 있다. 인증되지 않은 부품업체에 도요다의 중요한 부품생산을 의뢰하여 이러한 사태로 이어지게 한 결정은 많은 자동차 업계 회사들, 경영전문가, 그리고 학자들에게 중요한 교훈으로 남겨질 것이다.

This article examined the recent recall crisis of Toyota and the problems that were suggested by experts and scholars, and identified the real lesson to be learned from this case. Scholars and experts in the automobile industry suggested that this recall crisis provided a number of valuable lessons that are critical to businesses and their management. Avoiding aggressive growth, getting and managing facts quickly, selecting and managing a supply chain, accepting responsibility, and building a corporation based on its reputation were the five critical lessons that could be learned from this disastrous recall crisis. The results of this examination indicate that all four management related suggestions are simply criticisms of Toyota or supporting the public sentiment. However, the issue of selecting and managing a supply chain in appropriately is the key lesson that can be learned and benefited by many businesses. The real problem of Toyota was not in producing faulty parts, managing facts quickly, accepting responsibility, or maintaining their reputation. Their real problem lies in their decision to out source their critical components to a new and unqualified supplier, and it is the key and only lesson to be learned and can benefit many businesses including car makers, scholars, experts in logistics and supply chain management, and business students from this case.
