Korea is changing into the aging society with greater rapidity than any other countries in the world. The mobility of the aged and non-aged population within the Seoul metropolitan area where about half of the whole population in Korea is concentrated is one of the important factors for social change in the future. Having population mobility of the capital area divided into the early period (1996~2000), the middle period (2001~2005) and the late period (2004~2008), this study makes the flow O/D data concerning the development of new towns and the population change of the capital area with the expansion of the traffic network and the population mobility of the aged and non-aged population in the late period. Then, the regional distribution, mobility tendency and its characteristics are analyzed using GIS. As a result, it is first found that the pure migration of the population is concentrated by orders from the most to the least of five cities (Yongin, Hwasung, Namyangju, Koyang and Paju cities) outside the metropolitan area of Seoul. The reason is the purchase and residence of housing according to the workplace, education and real estate investment by the non-aged population. Second, the suburbanization of population mobility and the resultant internal hollowing are expanding in a disorderly manner, and the sprawl phenomenon is generated by urban decline and outside suburbanization. The adverse effect occurs because of the development not considering the circumstances such as the complexity of the traffic, natural and environmental destruction. Third, the mobility of the aged population shows the 3-district concentric pattern while non-aged population shows the pattern of long-distance mobility to new development areas in the south and north. Fourth, the aged population shows lower mobility compared to the non-aged population. This is due to the preference on familiar residential style, social ties and convenience. This change in the spatial distribution of population mobility suggests for diverse studies concerning local economy, housing land and new town development for housing supply, educational and cultural facilities, welfare problem for the aged.
