An assay on applied calligraphy

인간 상호간의 의사를 전달하고 정보를 교환하기 위한 실용적 목적으로 형성 발전되어 온 서예문화는 중국을 중심으로 한 극동지역에서는 대표적 순수예술로 발전하면서 동양예술 철학의 근간을 형성해 왔다. 이렇게 실용과 예술의 극단적 양면성을 띠면서 발전해 온 서예문화는 20세기에 들어 서구문화의 지배적인 영향으로 인하여 인쇄문화와 필기구의 혁신 그리고 최근에 이르러 컴퓨터의 일반적 보급은 실용적 효용에 치우친 나머지 전통적 순수 서예문화의 延命에 치명적인 영향을 줌으로써 예술적으로나 실용적으로 존폐의 기로에 있다. 그러나 1980년대 후반에 이르러 대학에서 서예학과가 신설되면서 서예 전문인이 배출됨에 따라 그들의 현실적 적응이라는 과제에 직면하면서 새로운 국면을 맞이하게 되는데 그것은 곧 실용서예에 대한 인식과 필요성의 대두이다. 필자는 이러한 최근 지난 20여 년간 조성되어 왔던 실용서예에 대한 상황과 추이를 전반적으로 점검하고 나아가 한층 진전된 실용서예의 단계를 응용서예라 제언하면서 단순 장식적 실용성에서 나아가 사업화 할 수 있는 분야를 7개 항목 (1. CI, 2. Sign, 3. BI, 4. 켈리그라피, 5. 폰트, 6. 인장, 7. 기타 생활 실용서예)으로 나누어 제시하고 아울러 그에 따른 4가지 문제점(1. 교육적 문제, 2. 제도적 문제, 3. 학습 방법상의 문제, 4. 교과 편제상의 문제)을 제기함으로써 전통 서예문화의 현대적 응용을 통한 새로운 현실적 가능성을 제시하고자 하였다.

Calligraphy culture has advanced for practical purposes that make oneself understood and exchange information between human interaction, it formed basis of oriental art philosophy while developing typical pure art in the Far East area with China as its center. Like this, in 20th century, calligraphy culture has developed with extreme duality. Also caligraphy culture was affected by a predominant Western culture. The critical affects of press, revolution of writing methods and general supplies of computers are leaning toward the practical utility. As a result, calligraphy culture now stands the question of maintenance or abolition practically and artistic. However, according to establishment of calligraphy department in University produced calligraphy specialist who faced new state that is called realistic adaptation. It is awareness of practical calligraphy and the rise of necessity. Author inspect overall practical calligraphy situation and condition that made last twenty years, furthermore, proposing advanced practical calligraphy stage as applied calligraphy, and suggest seven categories(1. CI, 2. Sign, 3. BI, 4. Calligraphy, 5. Font, 6. Stamp, 7. Practical Calligraphy etc) that capable field of commercialization proceed from simple decorative practicality. In addition, by bring up four following problems(1. Educational Problem, 2. Institutional Problem, 3. Learning Method matter, 4. Curriculum matter). author presents a new realistic possibility through modern application of traditional calligraphy culture.
