Sraffa's Economics and His Philosophical Legacy

본 논문은 스라파 경제학 그 자체가 아닌 그의 경제학이 형성된 철학적, 인식론적 기초를 검토한다. 스라파의 경제학에서 나타나는 주요한 철학적 태도는 환원론, 자기정합적 체계 혹은 균형, 그리고 추상적 보편성에 대한 반대라 할 수 있는데, 그의 이러한 철학적, 인식론적 태도는 젊은 시절부터 그람시와의 교류를 통해 이미 형성된 것이었다. 따라서 본 논문은 그람시와 스라파 사이의 철학적 연관성에 대해 검토하고 있는데, 예컨대 그람시가 제시했던 ‘출현’과 ‘파국적 균형’ 개념이 어떻게 스라파의 경제학에서 환원론과 자기정합적 균형에 대한 반대로 나타나면서 마셜 경제학을 비판 하는 중요한 인식론적 근거로 활용되고 있는지를 검토한다. 또한 그람시와 스라파 사이에 공유되었던 이러한 철학적, 인식론적 태도는 언어와 관련한 비트겐슈타인의 후기 연구에서 인식론적 전환을 가능케 한 매우 중요한 영향을 미친 것으로 알려져 있다. 따라서 본 논문은 비트겐슈타인과의 교류를 통해 스라파가 어떻게 그의 사고전환에 영향을 미치게 되었는지를 검토한다. 이를 통해 본 논문은 그람시-스라파-비트겐슈타인으로 이어지는 일련의 철학적 흐름이 현대 경제학의 갱신을 위해 매우 중요한 인식론적 틀을 제공하고 있음을 강조한다.

This paper examines, not Sraffa's economics itself, but his philosophical and epistemological foundation which developed his economics. The prominent philosophical attitude in Sraffa's economics is characterized by his objection to reductionism, self-consistent system or equilibria, and abstract universal. It is known that this philosophical and epistemological positions of Sraffa's had developed through the exchange of opinions with Gramsci during his youth. Therefore, this paper examines the philosophical connections between Gramsci and Sraffa. For example, this paper examines how Gramsci's ideas such as emergence and catastrophical equilibrium supported Sraffa's objection in his economics to reductionism and self-consistent equilibria and were utilized as an epistemological foundation in Sraffa's criticism of Marshall's economics. Moreover, it is known that these philosophical and epistemological positions shared bym Gramsci and Sraffa had an important effect on Wittgenstein's epistemological conversion in the latter period of his philosophical research on language. Hence, this paper also examines how Sraffa exercised a far-reaching influence upon Wittgenstein's way of thinking through the exchange of opinions with him. Finally, this paper emphasizes that the connected philosophical stream from Gramsci to Sraffa, and to Wittgenstein gives us an important frame of epistemology for renewing modern economics.
