이 글에서는 제주 방언의 ‘-느-’의 문법적 특성에 대해 논의하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 먼저 논의의 전개를 위해 제주 방언의 ‘-느-’와 중앙어의 ‘-느-’의 상관성에 대해 논의하였다. 논의 과정을 통해 중앙어의 ‘-느-’와 제주 방언의 ‘-느-’가 문법적으로 분명한 차이를 보인다는 사실이 확인되었다. 다음으로 ‘-느-’의 형태 분석 문제에 대해서도 논의하였다. 논의 과정을 통해 ‘-느-’가 ‘-ㄴ-’과 동일하게 ‘확신’의 문법 의미를 가지면서 ‘-ㄴ-’과 달리 ‘-냐’ 앞에서만 나타나는 배타적인 분포를 보인다는 점에서 ‘-ㄴ-’의 이형태로 볼 수밖에 없다는 사실을 확인하였다. 마지막으로 ‘-느-’의 문법 의미에 대해 논의하였다. 이 글에서는 기존 논의와 달리 ‘-느-’를 ‘화자의 확신’이라는 문법 의미를 나타내는 것으로 보았다. 그리고 이러한 사실을 구체적인 검증 과정을 통하여 확인하였다.
This study discusses the grammatical features of ‘-nɨ-’ in Ceycwu dialect and shows that ‘-nu-’ in Standard Korean and ‘-nɨ-’ in Ceycwu dialect show clear grammatical differences. In Ceycwu dialect, both ‘-nɨ-’ and ‘-n-’ have the grammatical function of ‘conviction’. Our analysis also shows that, unlike ‘-n-’, only ‘-nɨ-’ can appear before interrogative ‘-nya-’ and thus is in complementary distribution with it; hence, we must view these as allomorphs. Finally, with respect to the grammatical meaning of ‘-nɨ-’, and differently from previous analyses, we define the function of ‘-nɨ-’ as ‘speaker's conviction’. These conclusions are supported by concrete data and analysis.
