대학생의 교양교육에 대한 인식

University Students' Perception on General Education

본 연구에서는 대학 교양교육의 개선방안 마련을 위하여 대학생이 인식하는 교양교육의 중요도와 만족도, 교양교육 실태, 교양교육에 대한 만족도와 학생이 인지한 학습성과 등에 관해 살펴보는데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 대학의 기능별 특성과 대학 소재지를 층화변인으로 설정하여 조사 대상 대학을 무선으로 표집한 후, 조사 대상으로 선정된 각 대학 학생들을 전공과 성별을 고려하여 표집하였고, 회수된 1201명의 응답을 분석하였다. 연구결과, 첫째, 대학생은 교양교육이 중요하다고 인식하고 있으나 교양교육에 대한 만족도는 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 현재 교양교육은 고차원적인 지적 기능을 크게 강조하기보다는 사실이나 정보를 단순히 기억하는 것을 강조하고 있었다. 셋째, 현재 교양교육은 대학생의 핵심역량 함양에 기여하는 바가 적은 것으로 나타났다. 또한 교양교육에 대한 학생들의 인식은 대학의 기능과 소재지에 따라 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과는 국내 대학교육에서 교양교육이 질적인 수준 향상을 이루어야 하며, 교양교육이 대학의 기능과 특성을 고려하여 제공되고 발전되어야 함을 시사한다.

The purpose of this study was to learn students' perception on the importance, satisfaction, curriculum, teaching methods, and learning outcomes of general education. In order to understand the current status of students' perception, a survey was conducted with 1201 valid responses from students in 33 universities. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and t-tests. It was revealed that students' perception on the importance of general education was high, while satisfaction with these classes was lower. Students indicated that there are not enough full-time faculties in general education. Students indicated that the class sizes remain large. Courses for stimulating high levels of critical thinking, in most cases, were not sufficient and the teaching methods were lacked diversity. The educational efforts of students focused more on vocational success than development in core competencies. The results support the idea that general education needs to change to improve the core competencies of the students in most universities. Based on these results, further research is needed to determine the present status of general education in Korean universities.
