불완전계열의 변화 방향 고찰

A study on changing-direction of defective paradigm words

불완전계열(defective paradigm)은 의미적이거나 통사적인 이유 없이 조사나 어미와의 결합에 제약이 있다는 점에서 특징적이다. 그동안의 연구에서는 이러한 어휘를 공시적으로 기술하는 데 그쳤으며 몇몇 어휘에 대해서만 통시적인 변화의 결과로 설명하였다. 본고에서는 현대국어에서 불완전계열에 속하는 어휘들을 대상으로하여 통시적인 변화의 방향을 고찰하였다. 특히 완전계열의 어휘가 불완전계열로 변화하는 과정보다는 불완전계열에서 시작하는 단어의 존재 여부에 초점을 맞추었으며, 이를 살피기 위해 국어사 문헌 자료와 외래어 정보 등을 참고하였다. 논의를 통해 불완전계열의 변화 방향은 일방향이 아니며 어휘 부류에 따라 변화 방향이 다를 수 있음을 확인하였다. 이는 해당 단어가 불완전계열이 되는 원인이 서로 다른데에서 기인한 것이었다.

It is characteristic that defective paradigms have restriction on inflection and derivation without semantic or syntactic reasons. In former studies, these words have described just synchronically and only some words have explained diachronically. This paper examines the direction of diachronic change of defective paradigm words in modern Korean. Especially, I focused on whether words starting from defective paradigms exist rather than how words change from full paradigms to defective paradigms. I have investigated informations of loanwords and Korean textual materials between 15c and 19c. Through this study, we can confirm that the changing-direction of defective paradigms is not single but different according to type of words. These phenomena result from the fact that each type has a different reason why it becomes defective paradigms.
