Characteristics of Sino-Korean word syllables

국어 화자는 어떤 단어를 보았을 때 많은 경우 고유어인지 한자어인지 구별할 수 있다. 단어의 의미를 모르고 한자어의 경우 해당 한자어를 구성하는 개별 한자를 모르더라도 대개 추측이 가능하다. 이 사실은 한자어와 고유어 사이에 단어의 특성을 판단하게 하는 어떤 차이, 즉 두 단어 부류의 구분 기제가 존재함을 시사한다. 선행연구에서 이 차이가 단어가 가진 음절 정보임을 지적한 바 있는데 이러한 진술은 상당한 직관적 타당성을 가진 것이다. 고빈도 한자어를 구성하는 음절은 고유어구성 음절과 구분되는 특징을 보인다. 이 특징을 기술하는 것은 정확히 어떤 정보가 고유어와 한자어를 구분하는 핵심적인 기제가 되는지를 판단하기 위한 구체적 검증과정의 일환이 될 수 있다.

This study attempts to explore the characteristics of syllables that are used to identify Sino-Korean words. Native Koreans are able to distinguish Sino-Korean words from pure Korean words when they confront the words. In previous research, syllabic information has been considered as a crucial property to identify Sino-Korean words, which is considerably intuitive. The syllables that are used with high frequency in Sino-Korean words bear the syllable characteristics which are distinct from those of pure Korean words. This paper presents the detailed description of the syllable characteristics to distinguish Sino-Korean words from pure Korean words.
