청자경어법의 체계와 교체사용

The system of addressee-honorifics and its switching

국어의 청자경어법에서 나타나는 특이한 현상 중의 하나는 각기 다른 존대를 표시하는 형식들이 일정한 범위 내에서 혼용될 수 있다는 점이다. 이 글에서는 청자경어법에 나타나는 이러한 현상을 ‘교체사용’이라 지칭하고 개화기 국어에서 ‘교체사용’이 일어나는 환경과 그 원인을 살펴보았다. 청자경어법의 교체사용은 화용론적인 요구에 의해 일어나는 경우도 있지만 보다 근본적으로 청자경어법의 체계와 밀접히 관련되어 있다. 본고의 청자경어법 체계는 다분화된 등급 체계가 아니라 존대와 비존대의 이분 체계로 구성되며 존대계열은 다시 경어도의 차이에 따라 존대의 정도성이 구분된다. 청자경어법의 교체사용은 경어도의 차이로 설명될 수 있으며 단독사용보다 교체사용이 우세하게 나타나는 것은 청자경어법이 고정된 체계가 아니라 다소 유동적이고 역동적인 체계를 이루고 있음을 말해주는 것이다.

One of the peculiar properties of addressee-honorifics in Korean is that various forms that express different degrees of respecting are interchangeable within some range. Referring to this phenomenon as switching, I investigated the environments where this switching takes place in the Enlightenment period and explored the reason for that. Switching occurs due to some pragmatic needs but fundamentally it is related to the system of addressee-honorifics. The system of addressee-honorifics is not a multiple-grade system but a binary system, which has two distinct values depending on whether respected or not. The honorifics used for being respected can be further sub-divided according to the degrees of respecting. Switching of addressee-honorifics can be accounted for with respect to the differences of respecting degrees. The higher frequency of switching rather than an exclusive use of a certain honorific form reveals that the system of addressee-honorifics is not fixed, but flexible and dynamic.
