어휘부는 쓰레기 동산인가

Should the lexicon indeed be a dump hill?: with special reference to Choi, M.(2008)

이 서평 논문은 최명옥의 『현대국어의 공시 형태론』 (2008)을 비판적인 관점에서 평가하는 데 목적이 있다. 저자는 단어 형성부는 통시형태론에 속하며 굴절부만이 공시 형태론의 자격이 있는 것으로 보았다. 그러나 이러한 전제는 단어 형성의 역사를 밝히는 문제와 정면으로 충돌하게 되므로 일반성이 있는 체계라 할 수 없다. 그리고 저자는 명사와 동사가 어형변화를 할 때 조사와 어미의 이형태가 둘 또는 그 이상이 되면 둘 다 어휘부에 넣는 대안을 제시하였다. 그러면 어휘부가 커져서 쓰레기 동산이 되어 버린다. 이런 경우 이형태 중에서 어느 하나를 기본형으로 삼아 다른 하나를 형태음운론적 규칙으로 설명하면 어휘부를 반으로 줄일 수 있다.

This review article evaluates Choi’s A synchronic study of Contemporary Korean morphology(2008) from a critical viewpoint. Choi proposed that the word-formation component belongs to the diachronic morphology and only the inflectional component is qualified for the synchronic morphology. This assumption, however, cannot be widely generalized because it causes severe problems in exploring the history of a word-formation. Choi also proposed that when particles and endings have two or more allomorphs in nominal and verbal inflections, they all should be listed in the lexicon. If we do so, the lexicon comes to be too big like a dump hill. If we take one allomorph as a basic form and explain other allomorphs by morphophonemic rules, the lexicon can be diminished to the half size.
