Every woman in the contemporary society seeks to be beautiful even by means of plastic surgery and makeup as this is the age when beautiful appearance has decisive influence on social life and human relationship. Needs for studies on unsymmetric eyes have been raised by several reports showing that women have particular difficulties in make-up for eyes and eyebrows and by surveys revealing that plastic surgery is mostly favored for eyes. In an effort to find methods to bring harmony to and complement symmetrical unbalance of eyes, complementary makeups were conducted by experts to the disabled women who have distinctively unsymmetric eyes and, after securing their informed consent, landmarks and items of their eyes were measured directly as well as indirectly before and after the makeup by making use of design components of makeup and optical illusion of line and color. The results were compared and analyzed by using statistical program SPSS v. 15.0 for Windows. As for changes in measured scores before and after the complementary makeup to the 7 disabled women by experts, unsymmetry of their eye level decreased significantly by 0.06 cm from 0.10 ± 0.040㎝ to 0.04 ± 0.028㎝(p<0.01). The scores measured at the head of eyebrow decreased from 0.17 ± 0.107㎝ to 0.06 ± 0.041㎝ (p<0.05), while those at the peak of eyebrow decreased from 0.31 ± 0.101㎝ to 0.05 ± 0.071㎝ (p<0.001), and those at the tail of eyebrow from 0.20 ± 0.105㎝ to 0.07 ± 0.076㎝ (p<0.05). The tilt of eyebrow was also significantly lowered from 2.57 ± 1.737㎝ to 0.93 ± 0.923㎝ (p<0.05). Since the effects of complementary makeup for arranging the upper eyebrow, eye line of eyebrow and change of mascara for eyelashes were made evident by a scientific measuring method, makeup operation is suggested to be highly applicable for correcting and modifying the defects of eyes.
