Korean learners do not bother to use indirect quotation expresses since direct ones are good enough to convey what they said or heard to others. When Korean learners with some proficiency use only direct quotations like beginners, however, they can give out an impression that their speaking skills are not good enough. Thus practice of using indirect quotation properly in the overall story structure is a must in order for them speak Korean according to their learning stage and to deliver their experiences in a more vivid way like ative Korean speakers. Taking that perspective, this study found that Korean learners did not use indirect quotation expressions much even after studying them not because their learning of the grammar item was not sufficient but because they had few chances to use it in a meaningful way. It set out to investigate the effects of looking at and talking about a picture as a task to induce Korean learners to use indirect quotation expressions in spoken language.(Dong-A University)
