퇴계의 삶에서 ‘물러남’의 교육적 의미

The Educational Significance of ‘Stepping Back’ in Toegye’s Life

이 논문은 조선 중기의 유학자들의 삶에서 물러남이 지니는 교육적 의미를 퇴계를 중심으로 고찰하였다. 유학자에게 물러남은 단순한 직업 일선에서 은퇴가 아니다. 그것은 공부와 학문의 계기가 되었으며, 그런 점에서 교육적 의미를 지닌다. 조선 중기 유학자의 전형적인 삶을 산 퇴계 역시 정치에 진출한 이래 수많은 관직을 역임하였지만 일생 79차례나 사퇴의 의사를 밝힌 바 있다. 퇴계의 물러남은 당시의 정치적 현실, 개인적 성향, 학문적 열의 등 여러 계기와 동기가 결합되어 이루어졌다. 퇴계는 정치에서 물러난 이후, 마음공부와 학문을 위한 독서와 강학 등으로 일상을 보냈으며, 이러한 일상 활동들은 유학의 목표인 위기지학의 실천 과정이었다. 오늘날 우리 사회도 물러남보다 나아감의 가치를 우선시하고 있으며, 학교교육 역시 직업에 나아가기 위한 교육, 즉 직업교육에 일차적 가치를 두고 있다. 퇴계와 같은 유학자들의 물러남은 교육의 수단적 가치가 아닌 본질적 가치를 실현할 한 방안이 된다는 점에서 현대 교육학 연구의 대상으로서 의의가 있다.

In this paper, I examined the educational meaning of ‘Stepping back’ in the life of a Confucian scholar in Joseon period especially focusing on Toegye. Stepping back for a Confucian scholar did not merely mean a retirement from his job. It was a good opportunity to study. And in this respect, it had educational significance. Confucian scholar in the middle of Joseon Dynasty, Toegye who had lived typical life of that period also had entered politics and served as his office a number of times, but had tried to resign from his office 79 times. Toegye’s stepping back was motivated by combination of the political realities of the time, personal inclination, and academic enthusiasm. After retiring from the polititics, Toegye spent a day reading and studying for mind practice and academic studies. Those everyday activities were practice of wigijiihak(learning for self-perfection) which is goal of Confucianism. Our society today attach importance to value of advance rather than stepping back, and place value primarily on vocational education. Stepping back of Confucian scholars such as Toegye is meaningful in the aspect that it could accomplish the essential value of education rather than instrumental value of education.
