서사(narrative)의 본질과 초등교육적 의미

The Nature of Narrative and its Significance for Elementary Education

이야기 들려주기나 말하기를 통한 서사 경험이 초등교육 단계 어린이를 위해 특별한 교육적 효력을 지님을 실감하면서도, 그에 관한 이론적 실천적 이해는 아직까지 미흡한 실정이다. 이러한 문제의식으로부터 본고는 서사의 본질은 무엇이고, 교육의 전 과정 가운데 중등․고등교육과 구별되는 초등교육 단계에 고유한 과업을 위해 서사는 어떤 특별한 교육적 의미를 지니는가에 대해 탐구한다. 이를 위하여 먼저 포스트모던 관점을 반영하며 현재 교육학 분야에서 서사 또는 내러티브에 접근하는 다양한 이론적 실천적 연구사례들을 살펴봄으로써, 그 가능성과 한계를 반성적으로 검토하고 서사의 본질에 대한 총체적 이해의 필요성을 제안한다. 다음으로 서사에 관한 일반적 이해와 근래의 다양한 학문적 논의들을 통합적으로 고찰함으로써, 다른 담론 양식들과 구별되는 서사의 특징적 성격 및 인간 경험의 양식, 의미 소통의 방법, 탐구 양식으로서의 서사 기능에 대해 밝힌다. 마지막으로 서사에 관한 이론적 이해를 토대로 초등교육 단계에서 서사가 지닌 특별한 교육적 의미와 가치를 교육의 내용과 방법 및 목적의 측면에서 구체화하여 논의한다.

Narrative as a mode of experience by making and telling stories has especial meanings and crucial values for children’s growth in elementary education level. But we haven’t yet obtained the needed theoretical and practical understandings about what narrative is and how it works for human experience in general and for children’s educative growth in particular. In this problematic context, this study aims at exploring the conceptual meaning and significant functions of narrative in relation to the essential objectives of elementary education as distinguished from those of secondary and higher education. For this purpose, the major inquiry begins with the critical examination of currently increasing educational researches regarding the theoretical and practical implications of narrative, which is to show the necessity of comprehensive inquiry on narrative. Then, it analyzes and clarifies the essential nature of narrative, focused on its characteristic traits and significant functions in human life, with reference to various theoretical discussions about narrative from Aristotle's Poetics to recent works by Bruner, Polkinghorne and other postmodern scholars. Finally, based upon the theoretical understanding of narrative, the remaining part attempts to illuminate the educative meanings and values of narrative with respect to contents, methods, and objectives in elementary education.
