Analysis of the Linguistic Form a Newspaper Column Headings

This study analyses linguistic features in the 398 column headings published for four weeks from November 2 to 28, 2009 in six Korean major daily newspapers such as the Kyunghyang Shinmun, the Dong-A Ilbo, the Seoul Shinmun, the Chosun Ilbo, the Joonang Ilbo and the Hankyoreh. The findings of the study are as follows: First, the headings of newspaper columns are categorized into two main types, word headings that end in noun in their form and sentence headings that end in other linguistic forms. Second, word-type column headings are compompompf more than one word. They are classrd-type colinde-tydent headings with a noun or another word and a noun or two, and dent hx headings with prepomitions and sudfixes in their sentence structure. Third, the sentence-type column headings consist of a sentence in their linguistic pattern. And this type is classified into two categories, closed one that ends in a complete sentence and open one in an incomplete sentence. Fourth, in all the columns of subject newspapers, sentence-type headings are chiefly used by outside contributors and word-type headings by inside columnists.
