The purpose of the current paper is to analyze articles about the 3.15 movement appeared in Dong-A Ilbo, Seoul Sinmun, and Masan Ilbo from the viewpoint of Critical Discourse Analysis. More precisely, the paper analyzes how newspapers choose sources of information, what linguistic devices they use in order to express and interpret the information, and what their social meanings can be. We found that with respect to information picking-up, Dong-A Ilbo chose the information of the police's violent reaction to, and citizens' voluntary participation in the incident, provided by the Korean Bar Association. Seoul Sinmun reported the incident from the stance of the Ministry of Home, while Masan Ilbo chose information from the stance of the police. Both papers eliminated any information that could be interpreted as the police's violent reaction against the movement. They rather chose the information that was more likely to be seen the movement as instigation of Democrats. With respect to word choice, Dong-A Ilbo employed unpolitical expressions that revealed the police's violent reaction and citizens' spontaneousness, while Seoul Sinmun used political expressions that depicted a negative image of the movement, such as Democrats' instigation. Masan Ilbo showed a mixed feeling about the movement reporting it more vividly than other newspapers. These distinctive features of the three papers appeared to reveal their stances. Dong-A Ilbo and Seoul Sinmun, both are national papers, reported the incident for the purpose of seizing power. Meanwhile Masan Ilbo as a local paper switched its content from a political approach to the incident to detailed information in the site.(Pusan University)
