Stance adverbials are highly instrumental in expressing a writer’s evaluation, attitude and feeling in writing. The present study systematically identifies and analyzes the use of stance adverbials in the Korean EFL corpus and native English corpus. In particular, the study attempts to investigate the characteristics of different types of stance adverbials in terms of the frequency distribution, semantic and functional categories, and collocational value across the corpora. The results of the frequency analysis show that Korean EFL learners overuse the limited types of the target items. Thus, the repeated use of a limited set of the target items inflated the overall frequency of the target items in the learners' corpora. The present study also analyzes functions played by adverbial markers of stance by employing a semantic taxonomy. The analysis reveals that the epistemic stance was the most frequently employed functional category in the data. The study also demonstrates the collocational associations between the selected stance adverbials and their adjacent lexical items in the corpora. The results of the analysis indicate that learners used a less formal and spoken style in the data.
