A study on the evaluation of teacher training programs for Korean English teachers

In an attempt to enhance the competencies of English teachers in Korea, the Korean Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology (MEST) initiated teacher training programs in 2007. These training programs have recently been of great demand with the increased attention to TEE (Teaching English in English), and their number increased up to 22 across the nation in 2009. The present study evaluates these programs to see if they meet the requirements of the MEST. To this end, a scale named the professional development program evaluation (PDPE) was development The scale measured the following four categories: professional stakeholders, physical resources, performance process, and performance outcomes. Then, each training program was evaluated through the PDPE scale along with onsite observation and the survey. The present study reports the characteristics of excellent programs and areas that need improvement.
