This study organizes Japanese Buddhist monks’ entries into Goryeo and their activities around the late Goryeo Dynasty period and examines Goryeo intellectuals’ exchanges of verses as well as diplomatic and non-diplomatic relationship with them. Then, Japanese Buddhist Imjejong(臨濟示) monks equipped with supreme knowledge were dispatched to Goryeo both officially and non-officially. Goryeo scholars showed contempt for the Japanese as they didn't understand faith even when it was taught to them, and disparagingly expressed that they were poor creatures not having benevolence and righteousness. These attitudes were handed down from Goryeo intellectuals to Joseon scholars and even to the cultural envoys sent to Japan in the late Joseon period. These thoughts were regarded as general ones at that time, but when they receive Japanese Buddhist monks officially or nonofficially, they took consideration to their positions and revealed diplomatic purposes. Japanese Zen Buddhist monks with Osan(五山) as a pivotal figure did not fall behind Goryeo intellecutals. And among them, Manbong(萬峰) and Youngmu(永茂) displayed poetic talent to collect poems into books. By this fact, it is understood that their diplomatic ability and literary talent were comparable to those of Goryeo scholars. Diplomatic relationship and exchanges of verses between Goryeo intellectualls and Japanese Buddhist monks were carried out all over the nation, and the content of what they exchanged included such diverse subjects as social and ideological friendship.
