Islamic ethics should be of interest to both Muslims and non-Muslims because it takes much of the central core of Islam, if we can include Islamic law as integral part of ethics. In the first two centuries of Islam, the legal scholars tried to make Sharī’ah cover every ethical situation and the study of the God's law a subject par excellence in Islamic education. Considering education was the backbone of Islamic society, an important role ethics played in Islamic civilization is not difficult to measure. By studying ethical thought in early Islam, this article endeavors to investigate the feature of Islamic society and how Muslims' actions are related to their beliefs. It deals with ethical theory in theology and philosophy of the formative period of Islam, and concerns mainstream classical Sunnī ethical thought.
