This study aims at surveying the narrator's functions in Egyptian writer Muhammad Farid Abu Hadid's historical novel <Antarah ibn Shaddad the Father of Knights>. To fulfill the aim the essay defines the narrator's mission in the novel as characterization, description, summary, commentation and representation of dialogue. In performing his mission the narrator of <Antarah ibn Shaddad the Father of Knights> told the story from specific perspectives and observed the characters and events and from various distances, direction and angles. The essay concludes that the narrator narrated in third-person. He was omniscient in overall text, but he put in a number of situations certain limits on that ability. One of the narrator's evident shortcomings was that he controled the characters so firmly that they could not have their own personalities. However, the concentration of him on the main character Antarah's perception kept the novel from falling into zero focalization.
