'Spiritual Formation' in the light of J. Calvin's 'Duplex Gratia'

This article aimed to evaluate 'Spiritual Formation' prevailed from the Roman Catholic background, from perspective of J. Calvin's 'Duplex Gratia'. Firstly, the present writer historically investigated into the root of the term 'Spiritual Formation', analysed the theological principle of it, and found out that it's theological principle is synergism. In fact, synergism is related to a misunderstanding of the relationship between justification and sanctification. Therefore secondly, the present writer looked closely at J. Calvin's understanding of the relationship between justification and sanctification from the concept of Duplex Gratia. With the concept of unio mystica cum Christo J. Calvin avoided synergism, rather grasped Christian's freedom and responsibility in everyday life. To be a sincere Christian is, according to J. Calvin, to be a person under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit continually unites Christians with the Mediator Christ Jesus. Especially, with the means of grace, that is, the word of God and the Holy sacraments the Holy Spirit creates faith and strengthens it in Christians. Indeed, Jesus Christ himself established the means of grace. Therefore, thirdly and lastly the present writer concluded that besides these we do not need to searching for another means of grace, rather we christians pay thoroughly attention to apply the meaning of grace given by the means of grace in everyday life.
