At the beginning of the 19th century, series of reforms which called tanzimat promulgated in the Ottoman Empire between 1839 and 1876. These reforms, heavily influenced by European ideas, were intended to effectuate a fundamental change of the empire from the old system based on theocratic principles to that of a modern state. Also Turkish literature began to be influenced by western literature, western literary forms and western language. The first reform movement in Turkish literature was in prose with the help of Şinasi, Namık Kemal and Ziya Pasha. Even though they were opposed to the old prose style which called divan literature they could not go far afield from the old attitude in their works.
