The goal of the present study is to look at various plans for effective instruction in university writing courses, with focus on improvements/reforms made to writing course curricula in universities in the Daegu area. Among the five (5) four-year universities in the Daegu area, the study placed focus on analyzing the "reading"-centered courses at KEIMYUNG University and the writing courses offered at YEUNGNAM University. Course plans at the other three universities were also observed. Research results showed that while changes to the current "reading"-centered curricula have gone far in making up for curriculum issues rendering courses too functionalistic, serious problems still exist. "Writing" courses not tied to a program that deepens the students' "reading" skills cannot hope to satisfy even the role of "function", i.e, the means for raising competence as a "professional". By the same token, "reading"-centered courses not tied to the development of basic "writing" skills have the serious problem of overlooking the realistic needs of students who experience difficulty in "practical writing". This study analyzed these problems and attempted to suggest alternatives for improvement.
