This paper examines the concept of "doctrina" in Calvin's 1538 catechism in Latin, with a special research of its theological background and significance. Calvin's first catechism contains core theological teachings deployed earlier in the 1536 Institutes. In the first catechism Calvin refers to Christ noticeably as the substance and fulfillment of the law with an emphasis on the unity and continuity of His mediatorship. It is from this perspective that Calvin explores the primary office and use of the law as a rule of living and life-giving. Calvin sees the law as the law of the covenant of grace. The catechism highlights the doctrine of Christian life and Christian freedom on the basis of Christ's free imputation of His righteousness wholly fulfilled all through His life and death. By the covenantal imputation, God's people is being brought up unto the head of the body, Christ. In this way the "doctrina" works in the whole process of salvation by "edocere," by teaching.
