Calvin saw pastor as shepherd in the beginning of reforming work. He understood the three important tasks of the pastor as the proclaiming of the word, criticism of heresies, and pastor's model of the life and the realization of the saints' pious life through the discipline. Calvin's proclaiming of the word comprehended preaching of the totum scriptum, education of the catechism. He taught the children catechism with the cooperation of the family, church, and school in order for them to confess their faith in front of the church. He criticized the various heresies threatening the reformation and founded the orthodox dogmas. He armed the believers with the right doctrines through this work. Furthermore, The company of Genevan pastors tried to choose the man who has a good and sound knowledge of Scripture, a communicating skill of preaching, and is of good habit and conduct himself without reproach as a candidate. After the election, it is also necessary to have good supervision to maintain them in their duty. For this purpose the pastors met together every Friday for the study of the Scripture. And to obviate the scandals of living, they met every three months and corrected one another. He made the consistory which consisted of all the Genevan ministers and twelve elders. They assembled every Thursday morning to discipline the believers. Through this process, he changed Geneva into the perfect school of the Lord. Calvin accomplished the pastor's task of shepherd with this pastoral work.
