A Study on 'Ideology' in Korean Poetry - Focusing on Socialist Ideas -

Influences of socialistic ideology on Korean poetry are theses: First, it is well found in consciousness on proletariats based on socialism presented in 1920s poetry written by poets of anti-conventional school. In addition, poets living under the Japanese colonialism, KAPF poets rising just after independence from Japan, and 1980s’poets who supported labor movement wrote poems to espouse socialistic ideas such as people’s resistance, and liberation of working class. Second, the main poetic idea that socialist poets pursed is socialist idealism that emphasizes political purposes based on class consciousness and partisanship. Therefore, they use too many conceptual and emotional languages that emphasize political ideology but some poets such as Im Hwa, Baek Mu-san and Park No-hae express both ideology and aesthetics. Third, poetic practices of socialistic ideology are performed mainly by poetry that want issues of Korean working class to be recognized. Working class described in poems that espouse socialism as the representative of proletarian class plays a key role as poetic an object and at the same time as a subject of poetry writing. Fourth, socialism in Korean poems works as mechanism of resistance to the dominant ideology. Poets of anti-conventional school living under the Japanese colonialism and KAPF poets resist colonialism incorporated with capitalism and advocate proletarians’ lives. The progressive poets rising after independence from Japan and those after 1980s’focus on problems of imperialistic powers and of monopolistic capitalists who are connected with military dictatorship. Fifth, socialistic ideology certainly plays a role modernizing Korean poetry. Socialism provides not only ideas, logics and theories of poets who want to modernize Korean poetry but also new poetry writing method.
