The paper examines Korean elementary school teachers’ attitudes toward the English language and its ownership. The study adopted an explanatory mixed methods design: 1,327 in-service teachers in five regions responded to a questionnaire in the quantitative phase and 23 teachers participated in the semi-structured open-ended interviews in the qualitative phase. It was found that the Inner-Circle Native Speaker view of the English language was predominant among the teachers, indicating that the active discussions in the TESOL and Applied Linguistics fields about English as an international language and World Englishes, and their implications have not yet reached the practitioners and their classrooms in Korea.
