The purpose of this paper is to re-emphases the value of the historical grammatical interpretation to which John Calvin was committed. It is noted that some modern preachers tend to utilize the allegorical interpretation which overlooks the literal meaning of the text. For instance, when many pastors read Isaiah 14:12, they identifies the morning star with Satan. It is noteworthy, however, that their interpretation is divorced from the literal meaning of the text. Calvin advocated the historical grammatical method that attempts to uncover the meaning that a text would have had to its original human author and readers. Therefore Calvin came to the conclusion that the morning star in Isaiah 14:12 does not so much refer to Satan but to an arrogant Babylonian king. By celebrating John Calvin’s 500th birthday, this paper seeks to reaffirm that Calvin’s historical grammatical exegesis should continue to play a significant role in interpreting the biblical books by focusing on his interpretation of Isaiah 14:12.
