Urban Typological Analysis of the New Town Development Project in Seoul

1. CONTENTS (1) RESEARCH OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study is to analyze Seoul new town project during Lee Myung-bak's mayoralty with appling Urban Typology. (2) RESEARCH METHOD This study used Urban Typology suggested by Hank V. Savitch(1998) as a basic analysis framework. Urban Typology is mainly used to analyze the situation of power distribution among the main agents is the process of policy decisions. Seoul new town project is analysed through Elitism, Corporalism, and Pluralism which are the representative typologies in the three principal of power distribution applied to metropolitan redevelopment by Savitch. (3) RESEARCH FINDINGS In the results of this survey, Elitism and Corporalism tendency is identified as different forms in the process of policy execution(enforcement) between the first test(demonstration) development project and the second development project. 2. RESULTS In the results of this study, the first test(demonstration) development project is the policy execution(enforcement) of Elitism and the second development project is the product of combination of Elitism and Corporalism. It is desirable to move to Pluralism for sustainable urban redevelopment and effective conflict management among the stakeholders. However, it is obvious(judged) that Seoul new town project is enforced in Elitism and Corporalism.
