This study is about discussing the populace enlightenment of Buddhism. It is focusing on Wonhyo of Shilla and hijiri of Japan. Wonhyo is one of the special leaders of the populace enlightenment through going deep into the study of Buddhism. 7~8 centuries of East Asia was formed a community of knowledge and culture. Actually, Wonhyo was the major leader. It meant the ideology and works of Wonhyo functioned as an important model in the process to spread out Japanese Buddhism. The hijiri’s appearance like Kuya and Ippen, and their activities reminded of the pioneering works of Wonhyo in Japanese Buddhism. A great number of hijiri came on here and there. They took the main teaching of Buddha for the populace enlightenment during the period of Heian and Kamakura. They were called ichino-hijiri, ste-hijiri, amita-hijiri, kawano-hijiri, koya-hijiri, kanjin-hijiri, and nembutsu-hijiri. The populace enlightenment of hijiri was conformed the basis of Buddhism. As you can see, that is just the difference of Wonhyo and hijiri.
