Microscopic Structural Analysis of Official Documents about Koreans' Agricultural Emigration to Southeast Asia in 1930-1940

Even though the Japanese colonial authorities carried out agricultural emigration policies in many ways, there are few scholarly works about them. While there are some researches about general history of emigration, agricultural emigration has been hardly investigated. There are just a few studies about agricultural emigration to China proper, but there are almost no studies about agricultural emigration to Southeast Asia. This paper aims to investigate agricultural emigration to Southeast Asia, using structural analysis based on archives. The main material is archives on agricultural emigration to Southeast Asia in documents made by the Government-General of Korea which are kept in Korea National Archives. I made microscopic analysis on each division of archives-agricultural emigration to Southeast Asia and the list of laborers emigrating to Southeast Asia - and made clear some facts such as the process of emigrating and management of the emigrating section's affairs. The Japanese authorities prepared for Korean' emigration to Southeast Asia from June 1939 and transported the first emigrants in September 1939. 13 times emigration projects continued until February 1940. The purpose of emigration was to plant sweet potatoes, which were used to produce absolute alcohol.
