  • 48

Yang Seok-il is a Korean Japanese writer who published several novels, literary reviews and poems since he wrote 'Kwangjokok' in 1980. Though he is one of the most active writer these days, legitimate studies on him and his writings have not almost begun. This is time to examine his writings more thoroughly. We can conceive some things in his high level literature. Firstly, his novels are products of his own various experiences. He honestly describes his gloomy childhood and family history, the literary friendship in his youth and many vocational experiences after the bankruptcy. His writings also shows the nature of human beings and and society which he witnessed and realized as a taxi driver at late age. Secondly, his novels have some factors as literary works which the readers would be addicted to; the powerful, vivid description and the fresh literary style to stimulate readers' imagination and the reality of protagonists. In short, the high quality literature. These kind of achievement is due to his inborn literary attainments and long time reading power. Finally, his works have strong messages and critical mind toward the overall society the disbelief against politics and the reality of Korean Japanese, violence of fathers, the discrimination of Japanese society and the alienated people. His criticism is caused by insight into society and his rebellious nature which conflicts with established value and system. Yang Seok-il not only impeaches himself and his father but also sneers at the concept of nation and country, describing the drawbacks of Korean Japanese. Showing human nature enslaved by money and sex, in spite of moral hypocrisy, he expresses his anger against absurdity and contradiction of the Japanese society. His literature easily surpasses the category of Korean Japanese literature so far and takes the lead the recent accelerating change in it.
