The Early Period of Yoon Hakjun's Japan Life -Smuggling.Hosei University.Return to the Fatherland Campaign-

This paper intended to commemorate late Yook Hakjun, the professor of Hosei University, who had passed away in January, 2003. This paper appeared in Different Culture in April, 2004, in the specialized volume for review of his life and his accomplishment. Different Culture in a journal of the International Culture and Information Institute, which consisted of professors and students of the department of international culture in Hosei University. I studied, in this paper, the early period after Yoon migrated to Japan and tried to investigate the big stream of the Korean Japanese history in the postwar period. This work in different from just mourning Yoon, who passed away as an incumbent professor. Yoon's Japan life started when his elder brother was caught in the act of smuggling and ran away to Japan. While many Korean Japanese don't like to say the fact that there are a lot of Koreans who moved to Japan after World War II, not during the colonial period, he reported the detailed story of how he came to Japan. He participated in the student activities under the North Korea-oriented student organization and published a journal, Hakchikwang. however, he was unique in that he did not easily admit the orthodox interpretation of literature and disagreed with his organization's criticism against Kim Dalsu, a novelist. After graduation, he edited a magazine, Kyerim, which was important in Korean Japanese culture movement, although it could not fully bloom its possibilities. He thought that it was desirable to go to North Korea, his ideal fatherland, when the return to the fatherland campaign began. But, later on, he broke with the North Korea-oriented organization and he openly expressed his bitter regret as he knew the horrible situation of the returnees in North Korea. In the early years in Japan, Yoon's identity was divided into South Korea, where he left his family, and North Korea, where he projected his expectation and ideology. But, in due course, he decided that Japan would be the base of his life and contemplated the difference between Korean culture and Japanese culture. Yoon's individual experiences exemplify the process that, in Korean diaspora, many Korean Japanese finally settled in Japan through all their ideological, social twists and turns.
