Cesar Chavez, UFW, and Chicano Movement

  • 91

This study is about Cesar Chavez, the most well-known Latino figure in American history. He established United Farm Workers union(UFW) which was the first successful farm worker union in the U.S. and inspired the young Chicano generation in the 1960s. Thus, he has been regarded as the symbol and representative of the Chicano movement. However, strangely enough, Chavez has been also viewed by some as a timid accommodationist leader, even the tool of the establishment. In this context, this paper tries to understand such a wide gulf between his various reputation. In order to do that, this paper, first, discusses Chavez's career as a labor leader and the UFW labor struggle in the 60s and early 70s, and then, his relationship with the new Chicano movement, especially in the middle of radicalizing process of the movement.
