소설과 자본주의, 그리고 욕망의 삼각형

Novel and Capitalism, Triangular desire

  • 679

In point of the structure of desire, R. Girard has examined the relationship between the novel and the capitalist society. The desire in the novel is the mediated desire consisting of the subject of desire, the mediator of desire, the object of desire. The triangular desire in the novel has reflected the structure of depraved desires in capitalist society. The mediated desire changes from the external mediation to the internal mediation. In the former, the subject of desire does not compete with the mediator of desire. In the latter, the subject of desire seriously compete with the mediator of desire over the same object of desire. Human beings in a capitalist society dominated by the mediated desire is apt to believe in themselves as autonomous existence. But R. Girard has criticized that this belief is just a romantic deceit. Through examination about the triangular desire, R. Girard has emphasized that the novel which has reflected the structure of capitalist society must perform its critical role diligently.
