The different modes of social control mechanisms between the United States and East Asia are discussed primarily drawing upon Confucianism. The American get-tough polices and resultant prison population are juxtaposed with East Asian justice policies' focusing on reintegrative sham-ing and moral education. The comparison and contrast of realities of social control between East Asia and the United States is used as a means to exhort East Asians not to be blindly swayed by the wave of Westernization at the expense of their own traditional values.
