Azerbaijani novels were created in the likeness of the European novel. In addition, Azerbaijani novels have absorbed the elements from national folklore and classical medieval literature. As a result, the first Azerbaijani novel was formed as “novel-hekayat.” In the early twentieth century there appeared a new type of novels – “small novels.” The format of the “small novel” has been used by authors to display the ideas of national revival. The confrontation over the ideas and the genre influenced the literary criticism. The literary controversy has been aroused between F. Kocharli, S. Hussein, A. Sur, S. Ibragimov on the pages of newspapers and magazines at the crossroads of the nineteenth - twentieth century.
