A Study on the Opinion of Patients, Family and Nurses on Application of Physical Restraints

Purpose: The purpose of this descriptive study was to investigate the opinions of patients, family, and nurses on the application of physical restraints in a university hospital. Method: Data were collected from August 1 to October 1 2009, through questionnaires from patients, family, and nurses. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, and F-test using the SPSS/WIN 16.0 program. Results: To maintain treatment devices(33.7%) was the most common reason for restraint application. The majority of nurses had experienced complication of restraint and the major complication were edema, aggression, and bruising. Nurses and families recognized the needs of physical restraints more than the patients, but there was no significant differences on discomfort of restraint between 3 groups. Conclusion: Restraints have demerits of stuffy and make inconvenience to patients and family. Therefore, nurses need to make effort to explain enough to patients and family for the purpose of physical restraint application.
