박인덕의 『구월 원숭이』

박인덕은 세 편의 자서전을 영문으로 집필하여 미국에서 출간함으로써 ‘한국계 미국 문학’이 발전하는 데 크게 이바지하였다. 이 논문에서는 세 편의 자서전 중에서 『구월 원숭이』(1954)를 논의 대상으로 삼아 여러 층위에서 심도 있게 다룬다. 첫째, 이 논문에서는 박인덕이 이 자서전을 집필하게 동기에 대하여 자세히 논한다. 흔히 자서전 작가들은 동시대나 후대의 독자들에게 자신의 삶을 거울삼도록 자서전을 출간하지만 박인덕은 학교 설립을 위한 기금을 마련하려는 좀 더 실제적이고 구체적인 동기에서 이 책을 집필하였다. 둘째, 식민지 시대 박인덕이 농촌 계몽운동을 전개하고 실업학교를 설립하는 등 근대 여성 교육가로서 활약하였다. 셋째, 박인덕은 남성 중심의 가부장 질서 속에서 여권 신장과 여성 해방을 위하여 그 나름대로 노력하였다. 넷째, 박인덕은 ‘자서전’ 장르를 선택하여 자신이 살아온 삶의 궤적을 기록하지만 그 과정에서 자신의 이혼과 관련한 문제와 친일 행위 등 자신의 삶에서 어두운 과거는 될 수 있는 대로 은폐하거나 축소하려고 하였다. 결국 자서전도 소설처럼 문학의 한 장르로서 역사적 진실을 밝히는 데에는 한계가 있을 수밖에 없다. 마지막으로 『구월 원숭이』는 미시사의 관점에서도 의미가 있다. 박인덕 한 개인이 살아온 삶의 역사를 통하여 그녀가 살던 한 시대의 여러 역사적 단층으로 보여주는 데 성공하였다. 요컨대 『구월 원숭이』는 비단 20세기 전반기 한국 근현대사의 격동기에 한 여성이 겪어온 삶의 여정을 기록한 책에 그치지 않고, 더 나아가 일제 강점기의 한국의 크고 작은 사회적.정치적 사건을 기록할 뿐만 아니라 급변하던 국제정세에 대해서도 언급한다는 점에서 그 의미가 크다.

Descriptive rather than analytic in its approach, this article attempts to explore in a wide variety of perspectives Induk Pahk`s autobiography, September Monkey (1954), which has been rarely discussed both in Korea and abroad. It argues that this book, together with her other books like The Hour of the Tiger (1965) and The Cock Still Crow (1977), goes far beyond the narrow boundary of (immigrant) autobiography. Based on her own experiences not only in Korea under Japanese colonial rule but also in the United States as a student and lecturer, September Monkey is a profoundly moving record of her own unique life ― a painful but moving story of growing up from a mere country girl in a patriarchal society to one of prominent female leaders in Korea. In a male-dominated society, Pahk was one of the first Korean women who willingly divorced herself from her husband. Strongly willed and goal-oriented, she dedicated herself to the enhancement of women`s status in Korea and the establishment of a vocational school. This article further argues that this book can be also read as a testimonial to the turbulent Korean modern history in the first half of the twentieth century. In the book, for instance, Pahk described some significant historical events before and after the Korean emancipation from Japanese rule. At least in this sense, the autobiography is an early version of what has been called microhistory or little narrative. In addition, this article regards autobiography as a literary genre which conceals as much as it reveals a person`s life history. In conclusion, September Monkey by Pahk is a significant contribution not only to Korean-American (immigrant) autobiographies, but to Korean-American literature as well.
