John Keats`s odes written during the last years of his life are called `Great Odes.` His odes, however, have been praised mainly for its literary and linguistic merits not so much for their themes and messages. In this study, I tried to analyze his odes not only as great works of literary perfection but also as manifestations of `powerful and active thought,` as G. M. Hopkins maintained. This study traces his odes as results of his effort to make his soul and to attain Zen Buddhistic spiritual awakening, and, in doing so, it compares Keats`s odes to Hanshantzu`s Hanshan Poems, which are the representative poetry of Zen Buddhism.
