This study investigates the foundation and activities of Islamic fundamental groups in Central Asia. Islam in Central Asia had been limitedly allowed under the Soviet control. Since the Soviet Union maintained communism ideologically, the Union did not let Islamic political system be brought into Central Asia. In this way, Central Asian countries had lived without conserving their traditions. In 1980s, when the Soviet Union opened its nation with the perestroika and glasnost, Central Asian countries began to pursue their Islamic heritage again. Islamic Renaissance Party, Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, Hizb al-Tahrir al-Islam, Akromiya and Islamic Jihad Group which actively do their political roles in Central Asia show that Islam in Central Asia is now politicized. The activities of these groups identify that Islam in Central Asia did not disappear under the Soviet, but has been potentialized.
