The Special Quality of Creative Person: Polarity

본 연구는 창의적 인물의 특성 중 하나로 양극성을 제안한다. 양극성이란 사고나 정서에 있어서 두 극단의 사이를 왔다 갔다 할 수 있는 능력을 말하는 것으로 인지적 유연성이나 정서적 유연성을 의미한다. 양극성과 관련되었거나 유사한 이론들을 정리하여보자면 복합성, 야누스적 과정, 적응적 퇴행, 삼차과정, 순환적 사고과정 등이 있다. 본 연구에서는 이들 이론들을 고찰하고, 그 공통점으로서 양극성을 제안하며, 동시에 문헌과 인터뷰를 통해서 얻은 창의적인 인물들의 사례를 가지고 양극성을 입증하고자 한다. 특히 10명의 한국의 창의적 인물을 대상으로 한 인터뷰에서 그 중 5명은 양극성의 경향성이 있다고 답변함으로써, 양극성은 창의적 인물과 관련이 있는 특성으로 말할 수 있을 것으로 보인다.

This study suggests the polarity as the special quality of creative person. Polarity is defined as simultaneously operating different thinking processes or coming and going to opposites of thinking processes or emotion. It means cognitive flexibility or emotional flexibility. The theories about the polarity are ‘complexity’ of Csikszentmihalyi, ‘yanusian thinking’ of Rothenberg, ‘adaptive regression in the ego’ of Kris, ‘the third process of thinking’ of Arieti, ‘recursive thinking’ of Basadur. To prove the polarity, researcher surveyed documentary records and interviewed 10 Korean creative person. Especially 5 creative persons of 10 answered yes in the item of polarity.
