An Analysis of Correlation between Consistency and Proficiency in Raters of Korean Native English Teachers Evaluating English Pronunciation by Korean Speakers

We investigate the consistency of the raters of Korean native English teachers in pronunciation evaluation spoken by Korean speakers by calculating Cronbach’s alpha and corrected item-total correlations. We also look for correlations between consistency and listening ability which is assumed to reflect their English proficiency, or degree of their understanding of English phonological/phonetic contrasts. Teachers are highly reliable raters as the pronunciation evaluation and feedback to their students are part of the teaching in class but teachers as a group are not homogeneous in their English proficiency and the lower proficiency teachers have a positive correlation with their consistency in evaluations, suggesting that the higher the proficiency is, the nearer the pronunciation norm to which teachers refer to set up their criteria for pronunciation evaluation.
